SDSU Names Ric Hovda New Dean of the College of Education
Ric A. Hovda has joined San Diego State
University as the new dean of the College of Education. Hovda, who currently serves as the dean of the College of Education at University of Memphis, will begin his appointment on July 1. He will replace Lionel “Skip” Meno, dean of the college since 1999, who is stepping down to return to the faculty of the department of educational leadership.
"I am extremely pleased SDSU has successfully recruited an experienced and successful dean to lead SDSU's nationally recognized College of Education," said Provost Nancy Marlin. "With his commitment to education both at the university and at the K-12 level, Ric will be a respected leader for the faculty, staff and students."
Hovda will be responsible for implementing the College of Education’s mission to prepare future teachers and administrators.
Hovda has more than 30 years of experience in the education field. While at Memphis, he more than doubled external yearly funding from $8 million in 2002 to a record high of $17.9 million in 2005-06. In 2005, Hovda was instrumental in obtaining a $2.3 million grant to restructure the university’s teacher education program.
Previously, Hovda was the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Urban Education at the University of Missouri. In association with that appointment, Hovda also served as assistant to the superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools.
Hovda received his Ph.D. in teacher education from Ohio State University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education from the University of North Dakota.
