SDSU Receives 55,000 Applications for Fall 2009
"SDSU provides an outstanding university education,” said Ethan Singer, associate vice president for academic affairs. “More and more SDSU is being recognized for the many exceptional academic and cultural opportunities offered to prospective students. And that makes us a highly desirable university.”
With its ranking as the nation’s No. 1 research university among those with 14 or fewer doctoral programs, SDSU offers students opportunities for academic rigor, research, and international study abroad. Asked why they chose SDSU, students consistently list academic quality, diversity of campus life, the attractiveness of the SDSU campus and SDSU’s San Diego location as their top reasons.
SDSU remained a top choice by local students, with 11,022 applications received from within its service area, including first-time freshmen and transfers. Overall, SDSU received 61,492 applications for the fall 2008 semester, which ranked second in the country. The reduction in applications this year is a trend being seen throughout the CSU system.
“The economy seems to be playing a major factor in why application numbers are down,” Singer continued. “We’ve seen the greatest decrease in applications from outside of our service area. It looks as though more students are trying to stay closer to home right now.”
SDSU is still determining how many undergraduates will be admitted next fall for approximately 7,550 enrollment slots. Due to budget limits, there will be no enrollment growth in 2009/10. Students from within SDSU’s service area – south of state route 56 in San Diego County and high schools within Imperial County – who meet CSU eligibility requirements are guaranteed admittance. Most students selected for admission will be notified by the end of February 2009.
