At 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 31, the Jane K. Smith Cap and Gown Chapter of Mortar Board at SDSU will host the 24th Annual Emeritus Administrator, Faculty and Staff Outstanding Service Awards Ceremony and Brunch on campus.

Recently retired Jane K. Smith was selected as the one and only recipient of the Mortar Board Outstanding Service Award for 2009 and will be honored at the event. SDSU Emeritus President Thomas B. Day will conduct the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in the grove of trees between the Library and the Administration Building. Brunch and program will follow in East Commons.

About Smith

Smith came to SDSU in 1965 as assistant to David Malcolm, director of the NDEA Counseling and Guidance Institute.

In 1968, she moved to the vice president’s office where she served for 40 years as assistant vice president for Academic Services. Over the years her responsibilities included oversight of the curricular review process, production of the General Catalog, the Graduate Bulletin and the Imperial Valley Campus Bulletin, production of the class schedules, scheduling of classrooms on campus and faculty workload reporting to the Chancellor’s Office.

Smith was also responsible for the re-establishment of the Mortar Board active chapter on campus in 1987.  In addition she, along with Dr. Henry L. Janssen created the SDSU Honor Council.  As pointed out by President Day in his letter of endorsement, “Jane K. Smith has, in countless ways, set traditions at SDSU which infuse our University community, and beyond.  This honor is a small token of our love and admiration for this remarkable woman.”

About the event

The purpose of the award is to honor retired administrators, faculty and staff who have given generously of themselves to the university, its students, and the community.  Award recipients are memorialized through the placement of a bronze plaque at the base of a campus tree.
