New Director of Bands Appointed

Shannon Kitelinger's first conducting performance with the SDSU Wind Symphony will be Oct. 22.

Shannon Kitelinger is the newly appointed director of bands at San Diego State University, where he will oversee the SDSU Wind Symphony and the SDSU Concert Band.

"I am very excited to be joining the music faculty at San Diego State University,” Kitelinger said. “The potential for this music program is limitless and I look forward to the challenge of fulfilling that potential.”

Future performances and vision

His first conducting performance with the SDSU Wind Symphony will be on Thursday, Oct. 22 in Smith Recital Hall.

“My vision for the SDSU bands is to provide an environment that promotes performances of the highest quality wind and percussion music and enriches the musical experience for performers and audiences alike,” Kitelinger said.

About Kitelinger

Prior to his appointment at SDSU, he served at the University of North Texas where he assisted in all aspects of the Wind Studies program, including conducting all university bands, working with the athletic bands, and teaching conducting.

Kitelinger received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master of music degree in conducting from the University of North Texas, where he studied with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. He is currently finishing his doctor of musical arts in wind conducting from the University of North Texas.

Prior to his graduate studies, Kitelinger taught public school in western Pennsylvania. His ensembles were consistently awarded superior ratings at adjudication festivals, as well as being chosen twice to perform at Disney Magic Music Days in Orlando, Fla. An active guest conductor, he has served as an adjudicator and clinician for marching and concert band festivals in Pennsylvania and Texas.

A 2005 honoree of “Who’s Who Among American Teachers,” Kitelinger holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.
