The country’s number one small research university San Diego State University and El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF), a prestigious research center in Tijuana, Mexico, have signed an exchange agreement to fuel cross-border collaboration, it was announced today.

Collaborative partnership

SDSU President Stephen L. Weber and COLEF President Tonatiuh Guillen Lopez signed the agreement at a formal ceremony last month.

The partnership will allow students to take classes at both universities concurrently, with each university counting the units towards the degree. Mexican students will to travel to the U.S. to take classes at SDSU using the F-3 Border Commuter Student Visa.

Creating opportunities

“This partnership will create opportunities for our students to make professional contacts along the U.S.-Mexico border which will be incredibly useful when they enter the workforce,” said Jim Gerber, director of SDSU’s international business program.

“San Diego and Tijuana’s prosperity are interdependent, so by facilitating more collaboration between us, we can help create more opportunities for the region.”

Collaboration in areas of tourism, regional planning, private business, local government and education are planned as a part of this new agreement.
