SDSU 'Embraces' Local Homeless Population
Associated Students has partnered with local nonprofit Embrace to collect nonperishable food items and blankets from Nov. 1-7.
San Diego State University and SDSU Associated Students has partnered with nonprofit organization, Embrace, to collect nonperishable food items and blankets for the homeless population from Nov. 1 - 7.
Week of service
The week of community service is called "Embrace The Streets." Drop-off points include:
- SDSU Open Air Theater
- Select Hilton Hotels
- The Rock Church
The partnership with Embrace is part of an effort to better utilize college students to improve and assist the community on an ongoing basis. Embrace is a nonprofit organization that routinely utilizes college students to assist with their core service areas, including:
- Preventive health care for low-income children
- Education
- Homeless population
Past involvement in Embrace
SDSU Athletics partnered with Embrace earlier this year when the organization conducted a blanket drive for the homeless in the spring. Embrace's model systematically connects students with other nonprofit organizations and city council members whose purpose is to improve the community in a plethora of ways.
The program utilizes the perpetual need for community service to bring people of diverse backgrounds together for a common cause: to create a better, healthier San Diego.
'Most valuable asset'
"Embrace does its part to connect the community's constant need for assistance with San Diego's most valuable asset, our young adults," said Embrace President Sean Sheppard. "We're very happy to work with a university and its student government that understands how valuable its diverse student body is to the future of San Diego."
SDSU, Embrace and AS will continue to work with other nonprofit organizations and elected officials to create a multitude of community-based service-learning activities for SDSU students.
