The Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center will host an open house starting at 11:45 a.m. this Saturday.

Under construction for the past 18 months at 55th Street and Hardy Avenue, the new Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center opens Oct. 17.  Be sure to check out some of these special features during the grand opening celebration during homecoming weekend:

Address

Although the building sits on 55th Street, the symbolic address is 1897 Aztec Walk.  The numbers should be familiar to all Aztecs as the year the institution was founded as the San Diego Normal School.

Rotunda

Its circular design echoes the architecture of nearby Viejas Arena. The floor is lined with 484 pavers bearing the names and messages of alumni and friends.  The paver layout resembles wheel spokes converging in a center circle from which rises an imposing replica of Donal Hord’s iconic 1937 sculpture, Aztec.

Recycled roof tiles

Spanish-style tiles stripped from the Alumni Association offices formerly occupying the site have been reused.  The recycled two-piece terra cotta tiles lend both environmental and historical significance to the building.

Allan Bailey Library

Named for the late SDSU professor, administrator and alumnus, the Allan Bailey Library will contain works by Aztec authors and displays of memorabilia including a 1938 Associated Students gavel, a collection of Del Sudoeste yearbooks, programs from historic football games and other athletics items.  A television and fireplace adorned with a stone treatment will help provide a comfortable gathering place for guests.

Giant board room table

The board room boasts a 28-person conference table made with wood from a sustainable forest. The Executive Board Room’s 30-foot U-shaped conference table seats up to 28 comfortably.  Made of Macassar ebony veneer from a sustainable managed forest, it contains five built-in retractable computer ports.

Grand Ballroom

Boasting two large screens and equipped with state-of-the-art capabilities for video conferencing and more, the Grand Ballroom can seat up to 214 guests.  Changing space configurations accommodate a wide variety of events from intimate to expansive.

Historical displays

Located throughout the lobby and common areas, significant events and developments in San Diego State’s evolution are recalled in a series of displays.  The displays feature historical elements such as Daily Aztec headlines and campus photos dating back to 1897.
