Library's Mark Lester Retires After 30 Years
While Lester is no longer a full-time employee, he will continue working on a part-time basis.
Last week marked the end of an era in the Library & Information Access—after 30 years of service, Mark Lester is retiring from his full-time position.
A long career in the library
"The provision of service to the library’s users has been paramount for me throughout my career at the SDSU Library," Lester said.
"Whether working in technical services, public services or library management—and I’ve done all three—all of our programs and activities are ultimately designed to support the research and study needs of our students, faculty and staff.
"I’ll most miss interacting with students and faculty and trying to make their library experience successful for them."
From student to staff member
Lester, director of access, administrative operations and communications, has worked at the library since he was a student in the 1970s.
"It’s a day many of us thought we’d never see, as Mark’s dedication to the library is legendary," said Roberta Niederjohn, marketing and communications specialist for the library. "He loathes even taking sick days. I’ve seen him at his desk suffering from the flu or a bad cold on many occasions!"
Dedicated to SDSU
While Lester retires from full-time employment at SDSU, he will continue to work part-time in the library in an administrative position.
"I’ve been on campus since 1969, when I arrived as a freshman," Lester said. "That’s a long time. The ability to help the library make a transition by working part-time for awhile after retirement is also beneficial to me as I 'wean' myself from being at the university every day."
As he settles into retirement, Lester looks forward to volunteering with the San Diego Early Music Society, playing piano and traveling.
