In Memoriam: Art Linkletter

The beloved Aztec alum and TV pioneer earned a bachelor's degree in English and psychology in 1934.

The San Diego State University community was saddened to learn of Art Linkletter's passing on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the age of 97. The TV pioneer and host of Art Linkletter's House Party and People are Funny earned his bachelor's degree in English and psychology from San Diego State in 1934.

"Art Linkletter was a man devoted to education with a passion to share all he's learned over his incredible lifetime," said SDSU President Stephen L. Weber. 

"We are very fortunate to have had so many years to benefit from his great talent, sense of humor and keen insight. He will truly be missed."

About Linkletter

Linkletter received an honorary doctoral degree from SDSU in 1998 and addressed students at a commencement ceremony that year. 

Among his many honors, Linkletter was SDSU’s Alumnus of the Year in 1980 and elected to the Aztec Hall of Fame in 1990. Linkletter set a record in the backstroke as a member of the San Diego State swim team and captained the men’s basketball team, leading the squad to the 1934 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Always a loyal Aztec, Linkletter’s personal and professional papers, including scripts, letters, photographs, film and mementos collected over the course of his remarkable career, are housed at the SDSU Library.
