Alumnus Pledges $2M to Athletics
Frank Cuenca has supported SDSU sports since his childhood.
San Diego State University has received a $2 million commitment from alumnus Frank A. Cuenca, it was announced today. The gift, which will come from his estate, will support the SDSU Athletic Department and have a lasting impact on student athletes and programs.
Leaving a legacy
“We are thrilled to announce this commitment from Frank” said Athletic Director Jim Sterk.
“Frank has been an Aztec for life and this gift will leave his legacy upon Aztec athletics. With an annual scholarship commitment of $6 million, the need for private dollars is critical to the future success of Aztec athletics. We are thankful to Frank for recognizing the importance of scholarships for our student-athletes as they compete on the field and in the classroom."
Cuenca, who graduated from SDSU in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in history, is general partner at Monarch Retirement Group. He hopes his gift will ensure the university continues to thrive despite challenging economic times.
SDSU is an anchor in the community
“San Diego State is an anchor in this community,” Cuenca said. “Funding in the state of California is ever decreasing. I think it’s important to have intercollegiate athletics to call positive attention to the university in addition to the academics.”
Cuenca is a member of the Aztec Club supporting SDSU Athletics as a Big 50 football booster and has been a football season ticket holder for 40 years.
“I think this university is the core of this community,” Cuenca continued. “It's a legacy we can't ever lose sight of.”
