SDSU Launches New Homepage
The bold redesign highlights the Aztec experience through unique storytelling, imagery and video.
San Diego State University today unveiled its new homepage, a dramatic showcase of the university’s inventive people, innovative research and critical initiatives.
Check it out at http://www.sdsu.edu/.
The bold redesign features eight "cover stories" with striking imagery and video, which highlight significant work by SDSU students, faculty, staff and alumni.
"When visiting the site, you get to experience SDSU through the eyes of the people who make it such a world-class university," said Mary Ruth Carleton, SDSU vice president of University Relations and Development.
"You're searching for a normal life after two deployments to Iraq; you're rebuilding a school in a poor African village; you're exploring outer space for Earth-like planets. That's the SDSU experience."
The new page includes several areas to feature news, events, profiles, blogs and videos. It also features a new events calendar, a new mobile app and links to SDSU’s online communities.
The page also provides links to resources for future students, current students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Main navigation points readers to the important information visitors look for about the university, admissions, academic programs, research and campus life.
Design templates for SDSU colleges and departments
For offices and departments interested in building new sites or converting existing sites to a design that complements the new homepage, e-mail Aaron Hoskins at [email protected].
Campus web developers can use the HTML/CSS version of the template, which is available immediately.
Another version of the template will soon be available in a content management system, which provides an easy way for non-web developers to build and maintain websites.

Project development
Many groups took part in the homepage redesign project, including:
• The President’s Cabinet
• SDSU Web Committee and homepage subcommittee
• University Computing Office
• Associated Students
• University Senate
• Other campus constituent groups
The SDSU Department of Marketing and Communications managed the project that began in the fall of 2009. Jeff Ernst, senior graphic designer, designed the homepage.
Project leaders expressed special thanks to Edgar Hodge, Craig Sadler and Brent Coe for their work to deliver the new homepage in a stable and secure environment.
The homepage is delivered through a robust content management system developed by DreamBox Creations the Southern California-based full-service consulting firm that built and deployed SDSU NewsCenter nearly two years ago.
While maintaining compliance with accessibility guidelines, the system has proven its extensibility in adoption across the campus while continuing to leverage the latest user-experience techniques.
