San Diego State students have done it again—at 12:15 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, SDSU students unofficially set another world record.

This time it was for completing the largest tournament of baggo on record in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record. At 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10, 255 students gathered in the Aztec Recreation Center, formed two-person teams and played seven rounds of the bean bag game to 21 points.

After submitting all verification materials, Associated Students and the SDSU Aztec Recreation Center staff will wait up to six weeks to receive confirmation from the Guinness World Record company that they broke the world record.

Tournament champions Colin Reimer and Eddie Dixon said they were excited to learn about the event because it is “their game.” Reimer, a graduate student, said he played a lot in undergraduate school at University of Notre Dame.

Setting up to set the record

To validate that the largest baggo tournament took place at SDSU this weekend, Associated Students Aztec Recreation Center staff employed several steps for verification, including:

  • A numbering system for all participants
  • A roster including each person’s signature
  • Videotaping and documenting the event with photos
  • Three independent adjucators, or witnesses

Adjucators are witnesses with standing in the local community. This year's adjucators included recreation professionals not associated with Associated Students or the SDSU Aztec Recreation Center.

About baggo

Baggo is a lawn game also referred to as cornhole, tailgate toss, bean bag toss or bags.

Players take turns throwing six-inch square, 9.5 oz fabric bags filled with unpopped popcorn kernels at a platform 20 feet away that has a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until a team reaches the score of 21.

Second Break a World Record Night

This was SDSU’s second Break a World Record Night event. On Sept. 5, 2009, SDSU students officially broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest game of dodgeball with 450 participants. They held the record until May 12, 2010, when 700 people participated in a dodgeball game in New York City.

Associated Students and SDSU student leaders introduced the idea to break a world record as part of Aztec Nights in 2008. Aztec Nights programs are offered to support alternative non-alcoholic and drug- free events at SDSU and promote healthy lifestyle choices. For more information on Aztec Nights, visit the website.
