60,000-Plus Applications Received for Fall 2011
Approximately 7,900 applications were also received for spring 2011.
San Diego State University received 60,297 undergraduate applications for the fall 2011 semester, the third-most applications ever received by the university. SDSU also received 7,872 applications for spring 2011, the first spring admissions cycle offered since 2008 as a result of state and federal funds earmarked for enrollment growth.
The application period for fall 2011 closed on Tuesday, Nov. 30. The spring 2011 application period closed Nov. 15.
The 60,297 fall applications included 44,623 first-time freshmen and 16,946 upper-division transfer students. Of the spring applicants, 6,206 were from upper- and lower-division transfer students. 1,666 first-time freshmen who originally applied for fall 2010 resubmitted their application for spring.
The university expects to enroll more than 3,000 new undergraduates this spring. The number of students the university can enroll in fall 2011 will depend upon state funding, which should be known sometime after the governor’s proposed 2011-12 fiscal year budget is announced in January.
SDSU a 'first-choice' university
“SDSU continues to be a first-choice university for applicants, and for good reason,” said Ethan Singer, SDSU associate vice president for Academic Affairs. “The quality of students attending SDSU is the best it’s ever been; the faculty and staff are committed to providing students with a top-notch university education and SDSU offers a dynamic student experience, as well as career opportunities in some of the most high-demand fields in our economy.”
Over the past several years, the caliber of students applying to SDSU has continued to rise. Last year’s fall applicants were among the most academically accomplished in university history, with the fall 2010 freshmen class boasting a 3.6 GPA and 1085 average SAT score.
SDSU received a total 61,604 fall 2010 applications at this time last year. The two percent decrease in applications for fall 2011 can be attributed to the added spring 2011 application cycle in which 7,872 applications were received, the majority from transfer students who would have otherwise applied for fall.
CSU applications increase
System-wide, the CSU received more than 611,000 undergraduate applications during the priority application period which began Oct. 1 and ended Nov. 30. That is a slight increase over last year's record fall application cycle, when the CSU received approximately 609,000 applications.
Spring applicants are currently being notified of their acceptance. Several hundred applicants from the fall 2010 waiting list already received admission notification for this spring. The spring semester begins Jan. 19, 2011.
Fall 2011 applicants can expect notification of acceptance by March 2011 and begin classes in August 2011.
Apply for financial aid
All fall applicants are encouraged to apply for financial aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2, 2011. Spring applicants can also still apply for financial aid for the spring semester, but are encouraged to do so immediately.
Students who are transferring to SDSU in the spring and are receiving financial aid at their current university, should contact SDSU’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships or visit the website for instructions.
