Joe Jewell Pscyhedelic Trio Performs April 13

The group will perform works by Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield and T-Bone Walker, among others.

The Joe Jewell Psychedelic Trio will perform in concert at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, in Smith Recital Hall. Tickets are available at www.sdsu.edu/musicdancetix.

Trio members Joe Jewell, guitar; Baba Elefante, bass, and Mike Bennett, drums, will perform works by Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield and T-Bone Walker among others.

Jewell earned a doctoral degree in jazz guitar performance at the University of Southern California where he was Pi Kappa Lambda's Outstanding Doctoral Graduate. He was also the only guitarist accepted as a doctoral student in both the classical and studio jazz guitar departments at USC. He currently serves as professor of guitar and commercial music studies at Fullerton College.

Jewell has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He played guitar and banjo on the Los Angeles Opera's production of Kurt Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, which won Grammy awards for best classical recording and best opera recording in 2008.

With the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Ensemble, he has performed on mandolin, banjo and guitar on the American premieres of new compositions by John Adams and Unsuk Chin. He has also made appearances at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, the Ojai Festival and La Jolla Summerfest.
