Experts Called on for East Coast Quake
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook much of the region on Tuesday.
When the earth shakes in San Diego, Pat Abbot and Tom Rockwell are typically the go-to experts for local media.
So when a 5.8 earthquake shook the East Coast this week — something that just doesn't happen very often — the national media also turned to the two San Diego State professors.
Tom Rockwell on CNN
"Surprisingly, there have been a number of large earthquakes on the East Coast in the last few hundred years," Rockwell told CNN. "There are thousands of earthquakes every year. Most of them we don't feel. But some of them are large enough to feel."
Rockwell, professor of geological sciences, was also featured in USA Today and the Christian Science Monitor, and locally by KPBS.
Pat Abbott on HLN
Abbott, professor emeritus of SDSU's Department of Geology, told CNN's HLN that historically, there have been earthquakes on the East Coast that were bigger than this one.
"If we go back in time a little bit, 1755 Boston was really rocked," Abbott said. "1886 Charleston South Carolina was virtually destroyed. They happen rarely, but they do happen there."
Abbott was also interviewed by KOB TV in Albuquerque, NM, and locally by Fox 5 News.
