David Dozier, public relations professor in the SDSU School of Journalism and Media Studies, was presented the Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award at the 19th Annual Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards.

About Dozier

For more than three decades, Dozier has prepared thousands of students for the professional world. He has been called a visionary in the field of communications and is the founding father of a master’s degree program in mass communication and media studies for public affairs officers at SDSU.

He is the second-most cited public relations scholar in the world with more than 50 books, chapters, articles and scholarly papers, authored or co-authored, including “Using Research in Public Relations: Applications in Program Management,” written with Glen Broom, a cornerstone for public relations practitioners and students.

“I’m honored to have received this award,” Dozier said. “Although the award goes to an individual, my accomplishments were a team effort.”

“I’m grateful to my colleagues in the School of Journalism and Media Studies. Most of all, I’m grateful to our public relations students who have had such successful careers after graduation.”

Dozier, also known as the “Big Lebowski” to his students, works wit and humor into his lectures to make what could be dreary and intimidating material approachable and interesting to his students.

“Dr. Dozier is an outstanding researcher, a dedicated teacher and a wonderful colleague,” said Diane Borden, professor and director of the School of Journalism and Media Studies.

“He embodies what is best about the teacher-scholar model of education — creating significant new knowledge through his research and demonstrating excellence in teaching both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His recognition by PRSA, through its lifetime achievement award, is an honor well-deserved.”

Dozier joins the list of SDSU public relations professors who have received the Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award in the past, including:

  • Glen Broom
  • Allen Center
  • Kenn Ulrich
  • Joe Lipper

“It’s truly an honor to receive the same award as so many distinguished luminaries,” Dozier said.
