More than 250 Hoover High School students are on track to receive admission to San Diego State University in 2013 as part of the College Avenue Compact, a partnership between the university and the City Heights Educational Collaborative. The current Hoover High juniors were honored at a banquet last month commending their dedication to academic success.

“The College Avenue Compact is critical to help more local inner-city high school students meet SDSU requirements,” said Ethan Singer, SDSU Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs who addressed the students and their families at the banquet.

“These students will be a welcome addition to the diverse SDSU student body and we look forward to their arrival on campus.”

In addition to the students from Hoover, fifth graders from Rosa Parks Elementary School as well as eighth graders from Monroe Clark and Wilson Middle School were honored with the Future College Avenue Compact Scholars award for demonstrating strong academic potential to meet the College Avenue Compact requirements.

About the program

The College Avenue Compact is modeled after SDSU’s Compact for Success program with the Sweetwater Union High School District.

In order to receive guaranteed admission to the university, students must attain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, have completed all required college prepatory courses and have no college remedial requirements to fulfill at the time of high school graduation. The agreement also provides an alternate pathway to SDSU through San Diego City College.

Campaign Flag

The College Avenue Compact is just one example of how the university engages the San Diego region, a key initiative of The Campaign for SDSU. Whether it’s supporting programs that contribute directly to San Diego's growth or building academic programs to prepare for the region’s future, SDSU is an important community partner. Measuring success

The first alums of the College Avenue Compact entered SDSU as freshmen this semester when more than 40 students from Hoover High’s senior class of 2011 matriculated to the university.

Once SDSU students, the College Avenue Compact Scholars are offered mentorship and guidance at the university to make sure they are successful students and achieve their ultimate goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

About City Heights Educational Collaborative

The College Avenue Compact is one of the features of the City Heights Educational Collaborative. Since 1999, the Collaborative has partnered three SDUSD schools (Hoover High School, Monroe Clark Middle School and Rosa Parks Elementary) with SDSU, the San Diego Education Association and Price Charities to improve the educational outcomes for students in the inner-city community.

Earlier this fall, San Diego Unified School District unanimously renewed SDSU's City Heights Educational Collaborative through August 31, 2013.
