According to the San Diego County Water Authority, our region imports more than 50 percent of its water from the Colorado River and another 30 percent from the Bay-Delta in Northern California. The remaining 20 percent or so comes from local supplies, including surface water, groundwater, recycled water and conservation.

Critical issue examined

With water supply such a critical local issue, SDSU’s College of Extended Studies will host “Managing Water: Careers, Legislation and New Trends,” featuring a panel of industry experts from 8–11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6, in the Extended Studies Center.

Attendees will hear about innovative trends, the latest legislation and learn about careers in the water industry from San Diego-area water professionals. Additionally, information will be provided concerning the new online professional certificate in water management and landscape sustainability program that launches during the spring semester.

“This area is going to grow. Offering this type of certificate is going to be very important to our job market,” said National City Mayor Ron Morrison, chairman of the Sweetwater Water Authority and San Diego Regional Solid Waste Association, as well as a director on the board of the San Diego County Water Authority.

Industry experts

The panel of industry experts for the Jan. 6 event includes:

  • Cathy C. Pieroni, principal water resources specialist, City of San Diego, public utilities department
  • Toby J. Roy, water resources manager, San Diego County Water Authority, desalination plans
  • Robert Yamada, P.E.; water resources manager, San Diego County Water Authority

Fee for the event is $25 and includes complimentary parking, breakfast and beverages.
