A surge of giving has pushed The Campaign for SDSU beyond $280 million following the public phase launch in September.

Donors have responded overwhelmingly to the opportunity to fuel student success and propel San Diego State University to the next level of excellence.

Leadership Starts Here

With the theme "Leadership Starts Here," SDSU’s first-ever university-wide fundraising campaign has inspired alumni, parents and friends to make gifts of all sizes to support scholarships, academic programs, student services and faculty endowments.

Among the gifts received this fiscal year are:

  • More than $30,000 from head football coach Rocky Long to support athletic medicine and student-athlete academic programs
  • $100,000 from SDSU President Elliot and Mrs. Jeri Hirshman in support of university-wide initiatives
  • More than $300,000 from hundreds of donors to the Annual Fund, SDSU’s vital pipeline for smaller gifts to the campaign

“Each one of these gifts is from someone who is passionate about SDSU and who understands the difference this university can make in a young person’s life,” said Mary Ruth Carleton, vice president of University Relations and Development.

Great need

The need for philanthropic support has never been greater, as SDSU faces serious budget challenges. The California State University budget was reduced by $100 million Dec. 13, translating into a $7.8 million budget reduction for SDSU.

Given these challenges, how can the university continue to increase access and provide educational opportunities for students? Only through the transformational power of The Campaign for SDSU.

President Hirshman, in conversations with alumni and community supporters, continues to underscore the goal of SDSU’s $500-million fundraising effort.

“This campaign is for our extraordinary students, who will be the future leaders of San Diego and our nation,” he said. “It is also for our faculty and staff who are carrying out the core mission of the university. The Campaign for SDSU is absolutely essential to the success of our university.”
