Undergrad Applications Set Record
More than 69,000 freshmen and upper-division transfer students applied for fall 2012 admission.
San Diego State University received 69,225 undergraduate applications for the fall 2012 semester, the most applications ever received by the university.
15 percent increase
That is a 15 percent increase over last year at this time when SDSU received 60,085 undergraduate applications for fall 2011. The previous record set was 62,330 undergraduate applications received for fall 2008.
The application period for fall 2012 closed on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
Among the 69,225 fall undergraduate applications are 50,705 freshmen and 18,181 upper-division transfer students. Freshmen applications are up 14 percent, while upper-division transfer applications are up 19 percent.
Systemwide applications
Systemwide, the California State University received 665,860 undergraduate applications during the priority application period, a 9 percent increase over last year's record fall application cycle, when the CSU received 611,225 applications.
“I am extremely pleased to see the strong and continuing interest of applicants in San Diego State,” said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. “Our record number of applicants is a testament to the strength of our academic and co-curricular programs, as well as the extraordinary talents and efforts of our faculty, staff and students.”
Accomplished and diverse freshmen
The academic caliber of students applying to SDSU continues to rise. The fall 2011 freshmen enrollees were among the most academically accomplished in university history with an average high school GPA of 3.62 and 1080 SAT score (based only on the math and verbal sections total score of 1600).
SDSU’s 2011 freshmen class was also the most diverse in university history, with 57 percent being students of color. SDSU is among the top 25 most diverse campuses in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2012.”

Fall 2012 applicants can expect notification of acceptance by March 2012.
