Fall in Love with South Bay Art Scene Feb. 11
heART on Center features hands-on arts activities and a variety of entertainment in Chula Vista.
Falling on Feb. 11, the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, heART on Center is an opportunity for the young and young-at-heart who care about the South Bay community, to fall in love with its diverse arts.
heART on Center, taking place from 4 - 8 p.m., on Center Street in Chula Vista will feature:
- Local artists
- Musicians
- Performers
- Educational outreach
The event features the San Diego Youth Symphony's Opus Project, and featured artists and musicians with
- Artisan Lounge
- Imperial Beach's The Art Kids of San Diego County
- National City’s Youth Theatre Ensemble
- Southwestern College of Arts
- Casa Familiar’s Ballet Folklorico
- Chula Vista's Nature Center and Garden Club
- South Bayfront Artists
- Learning Tools for Global Schools
- South Bay Alliance for Arts Education
The event also features musical performances by AfroJazziacs with singers Karlos Paez of B*Side Players, David Ornelas of Stranger and Adrian Cisneros of Roots Covenant.
About heART on Center
heART on Center is driven by the vision and research of the students of the LoCAL Arts Collaborative, a project-based research and civic-engagement student collaborative at San Diego State University (SDSU). The event is hosted by the City of Chula Vista, event sponsor Casa Familiar and with support from the Third Avenue Village Association. The student collaborative and the event are also supported by Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox and Councilmember Pamela Bensoussan.
heART on CENTER is the product of the continuous effort from SDSU students. Each student in the course comes from a different academic discipline and is handselected every semester to participate in the unique collaborative.
Kimberly Feilen, professor in the SDSU Division of Undergraduate Studies, created the hybrid undergraduate project-based research and civic engagement course as part of a service-learning initiative with SDSU’s Center for Regional Sustainability.
For the past two years, students of the LoCAL Arts Collaborative have been engaged in community-building with artist, musicians, educators, businesses, civil government, non-profits and other advocates that nurture and protect the arts in the South Bay community. The heART on Center event was developed as one of many civic action steps.
“I wanted us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and to give back to the community," Feilen said.
The newly implemented course, “Sustaining Our Community Through the Arts,” guides students in addressing community sustainability within San Diego's South Bay by promoting the importance of the arts and its advocates.
Unlike traditional university courses, the collaborative is unique and is structured to provide students the opportunity to not only gain undergraduate research experience, but to engage them in civic-learning by focusing on real-world challenges in the local community.
