SDSU University Dance Company to Perform Faculty Choreographed Work

San Diego State’s University Dance Company will perform choreography by SDSU dance faculty beginning May 4 for a one-weekend engagement. A pre-professional group, the company has recently performed at the American College Dance Festival and at the 75th Anniversary Concert for the School of Music and Dance.

Established in 1989, the company is one of only four BFA dance degree programs in the CSU system. As an affiliate company, the UDC has launched many student dancers into professional careers, both locally and nationwide.

About the Performance

Duet for Four, a work created by Joe Alter examines gesture and the nature of touch. It is set to music by The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band and Dustin O’Halloran.

Patricia Sandback uses music from Praktisch Deutsch, a piece for spoken choir by Finnish composer Rautavaara, using conversational German travel phrases.

Melissa Nunn’s Under the Stairs explores the mystery and curiosity of two songs by Aphex Twin. The second song imagines a boy’s magical life under a staircase. It is performed by Jordan Jones and 2012 Outstanding Graduate in dance, Andrew Holmes.

Also on the program is guest artist Vanessa Justice’s work Sweet Empty for an ensemble cast, Leslie Seiters’ less sweet fruit, and Winding Down by Jess Humphrey.

The performances run May 4 and 5, 2012 at 8 p.m., and May 6 at 2 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theater - ENS-200. Tickets are $12 general/$8 students and can be purchased online at www.sdsu.edu/musicdancetix.
