The San Diego State men’s club rugby team recently played in the Collegiate Club Rugby National Championship game in Sandy, Utah.

Although the team didn’t bring home the gold against defending national champions Davenport University, competing at this level is no small feat.

To get to the national championship game, the Aztecs had to beat the likes of Tennessee, Santa Clara, and UCSB, who was ranked third in the nation at the time SDSU played them.

Aztec rugby is one of many club sports at SDSU that allows students to compete at a high level against other collegiate club teams.

SDSU offers 18 club sports, ranging from crew to snowboarding.  More than 500 students participate in the club programs each year.  Aztec clubs have combined for eight national championships, including:

  • Surf- Nationals Scholastic Surfing Association, 2006 and 2007
  • Women’s soccer- National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Collegiate, 2006
  • Water Ski-National Collegiate Water Ski Association, 1979 and 2006
  • Rugby-USA College Rugby, 1987
  • Bowling-Women’s United States Bowling Congress  Collegiate, 1974

Other club sports programs include:

  • Men’s crew
  • Cycling
  • Ice Hockey
  • Men’s and women's lacrosse
  • Skiing and snowboarding
  • Men’s and women's soccer
  • Men’s and women's ultimate Frisbee
  • Men’s and women's volleyball
  • Men’s and women's water polo

“What’s awesome about sports clubs is that the students are in charge of taking initiative,” said Andrew Reddish, intramural sports and sports club advisor.  “They are given a budget. They fundraise, organize and delegate positions, and are responsible for everything.  They’re the ones who make it all happen.”

More than just sports

Students who play club sports work as hard — in some cases harder — as other student athletes.

“Students learn to be more responsible through club sports,” Reddish said. “Although we provide guidance, a lot of the responsibility of the program falls on them.  They coordinate travel plans, order uniforms, delegate roles within the team and more.  This can really be a learning experience.”
