John Gordon Returns to SDSU

Gordon will become director of the SDSU School of Art, Design and Art History again, effective July 2012.

San Diego State University’s School of Art, Design and Art History has re-appointed John Gordon to the position of director of the School of Art, Design and Art History effective July 1, 2012.

Prior tenure

After serving as director of the school from 2002 to 2004, Gordon gained experience as dean, vice president, panelist, professor and director at other art institutions and organizations across the country.

Gordon recently completed five years as the first provost for Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.

Impressive credentials

“With impressive credentials and over 30 years of experience in higher education, John is an ideal candidate to lead the school,” said Dean Joyce Gattas. “John is an advocate for the arts and art education. He is known nationally and internationally for his very own works of art.”

With an outstanding record of service on art juries, panels, councils, committees and boards, Gordon also has an extensive listing of professional reviews and articles to his credit.

Sculpture exhibitions

His sculptures have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the nation, including:

  • L.A. Louver Gallery of Venice, Calif.
  • Artist's Space, New York
  • New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts
  • Whitney Museum of American Art

Gordon is also a recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship and Director’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
