Olympic Trials Beckon Aztec Swimmers

Five SDSU student athletes qualified for the U.S. trials, June 25 - July 2.

Five San Diego State swimmers qualified to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials set to take place at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., from June 25 to July 2.

Aztec athletes

Senior Katelyn Weddle will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with the prelims in those events set for July 26 and 29 respectively.

Fellow senior Leona Jennings will swim in the prelims for the 100 backstroke on July 26, the 200 backstroke on July 30 and the 50 freestyle on July 1.

Incoming freshman Natalie Ruiz will join Jennings in the 200 backstroke. Ruiz also qualified for the 200 individual medley which gets underway on July 27.

Junior Mikaela Macklin will compete in the 200 individual medley, while senior Meghan Zimmer has qualified for the 200 freestyle which begins on July 27.

Potential Olympians

The swimmers with the top 16 times during the preliminary heats will advance to the semifinals. From there, the top eight times in the semis move on to the finals with the first- and second-place finishers in the finals qualifying for the 2012 Olympics which will be held in London July 27-August 12.
