Dalai Lama Gift Supports Homeless Children
The Monarch School will use the gift to create a leadership program.
Lama Tenzin Dhonden, the Personal Peace Emissary for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and executives from San Diego State University, University of California San Diego and University of San Diego presented the Monarch School with a check for $51,000.
The funds are surplus net revenue from the 14th Dalai Lama’s April visit to San Diego.
The Monarch School will use the money to support a new student leadership program currently in development. The focus of the program will teach students about the importance of civic engagement, leadership and community participation.
"His Holiness the Dalai Lama has selected an ideal cause for us to support," said SDSU Provost Nancy Marlin. "Because 'Leadership Starts Here' at San Diego State University, developing leaders is a cornerstone of our mission, and we are proud that this funding will seed a new leadership program at the Monarch School."About the Monarch School
The mission of the Monarch School is to educate students impacted by homelessness and to help them develop hope for a future with the necessary skills and experiences for personal success.
