Military Raise LGBT Flag

For first time in the five-year history of SDSU's rainbow flag raising ceremony, uniformed military personnel participated in support of the LGBT community.

The change resulted from the 2012 repeal of the “don’t ask don’t tell” military policy.

Lorena Saldana of the Army, Lindsay Price of the Navy and Jose Navarro of the Air Force had the honor of raising the rainbow flag at the end of the ceremony.

Nearly 100 SDSU students, faculty, staff and members of the community gathered today in front of Hepner Hall to kick off SDSU's celebration of Pride Week. The ceremony is one of many events hosted by SDSU in celebration of diversity.

“The rainbow flag has been a symbol of the LGBT community for over 30 years," said Aaron Bruce, SDSU’s chief diversity officer. "The colors of the rainbow are symbolic of both the unity and diversity of the LGBT community.”

LGBT-friendly campus

Community groups and organizations consistently recognize SDSU as a top school for supporting LGBT students.

“San Diego State University has a firm commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice," Bruce said. "This event is just one of the many ways we celebrate our values."

San Diego Pride Parade

Students, faculty and staff can also participate in the upcoming San Diego Pride Parade.  The parade is a part of the annual Pride Festival, which produces civic, cultural and educational programs to support pride within San Diego’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
