Olympics Q&A
SDSU alumnus Steven Luke is in London covering the Olympics for NBC San Diego and he took time to answer a few questions about the experience.
- If you could compete in an Olympic sport, which one would it be?

1. If you could compete in an Olympic sport, which one would it be?
Luke: "Pole Vault… I did it in high school and I would like to know what it feels like to be good at it."
2. Which local Olympian should San Diegan's look out for?
Luke: "One? How about a few? Meb Keflezighi (marathon) competes on the final day in what will be his final Olympics. He’s had a good run and is a long time San Diegan. Sarah Hammer is a four-time world champion track cyclist from Temecula, and the only thing she hasn’t done in career is win an Olympic Medal. Brady Ellison is an archer currently ranked No. 1 in the world. I’ve got more…"
3. What is the coolest site you've seen so far in London?
Luke: "Coolest site was the Tower Bridge at sunrise." (Check out his picture here.)
4. The Olympics are BIG in San Diego. Why do you think that is?
Luke: "The training center is obviously a big part of it, as athlete’s move to San Diego for the facility and then end up making a life here. The weather is ideal for training. San Diego also just seems to find its way into big stories and there is no bigger story in sports than the Summer Olympics."
5. What will a typical day be like covering the games?
Luke: "A typical day will be waking up around 5:30 am to get over to the International Broadcast Center for the late news (Pacific time). I’ll also be doing live hits for the NBC 7 morning news which is between 1 and 3 pm London time. The rest of the time will be spent shooting, writing and editing stories and of course getting from point A to point B. Normal days are about 15 hours minimum, but well worth it."
6. How do you fit in food? Is there a cool reporter eatery/hangout?
Luke: "There is a 24 hour NBC cafeteria with just about everything you can imagine. They even have a private Starbucks, the only one I’ve ever seen without registers!"
7. How can San Diegans keep up with you while in London?
Luke: "I’m on twitter @stevenlukenbc and have a facebook page Steven Luke NBC 7 San Diego. I’ll also be on live during our morning show (5 – 7 a.m.) and on our late news which airs at midnight during the games."
