Five students in Andrew Baker’s MKTG 476 Internet/Interactive Marketing class earned bragging rights, as they finished amongst the top 20 teams competing in the Google Online Marketing Challenge.

The challenge commenced at the end of January and winners were announced on Aug. 9.

Of the 2,800 teams competing on a global basis, the team was named amid the top one percent and was one of only five teams in North America named as a finalist.

About the competition

The challenge was to identify a small-to-medium business or non-profit organization that has a website, but that did not utilize Goodle AdWords. Students were then tasked with creating, maintaining and monitoring a successful AdWords campaign.

The students worked with Granny’s Granola, a small business out of Leucadia, Calif. that makes granola and granola-based bread and bars that are sold at local farmers’ markets.

The team consisted of:

  • Kai Burtyk
  • Ian Donahue
  • Alec Johnson
  • Trevor Morrissey
  • Mike Revie

“Search engine advertising is a $20 billion per year industry which made this an excellent real-world experience for both our teams and their clients, “ Baker said. “All of the other SDSU teams finished in the top 15 percent. SDSU teams were overachievers and I am really proud of them.”
