Campus Safety Update

The SDSU Police Department is reporting that the fourth and final suspect from the Sept. 8 robbery in Parking Structure 5 is in custody. All 7 suspects from the robberies on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 have been arrested.

The recent increase in criminal activity on the San Diego State University campus and in the College Area is of great concern to the university. To address these recent incidents, the university is leveraging all of the SDSU Police Department's resources to identify the individuals responsible while working to ensure a safe campus environment.

Suspects in custody

Three of the four suspects from the Sept. 1 robbery have been identified and arrested.  In addition, both of the suspects from the Sept. 9 robbery, including the shooter, has been apprehended.  The university is working diligently to identify and locate the remaining suspects using all means at our disposal and through cooperative relationships with allied agencies in the San Diego area.  Officials believe these suspects may have been responsible for other crimes on campus and are glad to have them in custody.

Making campus more safe

To deter further incidents and help in the apprehension of other criminals, SDSU is taking immediate action.  This includes increasing the number of officers on patrol and deploying various technologies, such as more security cameras and other surveillance tools. Light towers will also be placed in strategic locations to enhance visibility and safety. These are in addition to the considerable resources we already have on campus.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to familiarize themselves and take full advantage of services such as the free Safety Escort Service and education programs.

Be aware of your surroundings

All people on campus are encouraged to take basic safety precautions as outlined in the fall safety message, maintain an awareness of surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the SDSU Police Department immediately.  For crimes in progress or life threatening emergencies call 9-1-1. Non-emergencies can be directed to dispatch at 619-594-1991.

Being in a large metropolitan area, it is difficult to eliminate crime altogether, but community members can continually work to limit its impact on the campus.  Working in collaboration with community partners and law enforcement allies will help ensure a positive academic environment.
