Ardent student supporters of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney shared elation and disbelief respectively, as the president decisively won re-election tonight.

In winning more than 50 percent of the national vote and at least 303 electoral votes, President Obama won Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin, a near sweep of the battleground states, and held a narrow advantage in Florida.

In the months leading to the election, SDSU student groups initiated registration drives, held debates and reached out to their peers to generate support for their candidates.

Ronnie Landfair Jr., a member of Aztecs for Obama, said the efforts paid off.

“I am very excited and I believe a win for President Obama, is a win for this nation,” said Landfair, a Navy veteran majoring in sociology.

Eric Hughes, a member of the College Republicans at SDSU, watched election results at Golden Hall.

“Although this is a setback, Republicans will continue to fight for reform,” said Hughes, a senior majoring in electrical engineering.  “Hopefully, during his second term Obama turns words into action.”

Volunteers, including some from Associated Students, staffed the polling station at SDSU's Parma, Payne Goodall Alumni Center.

More than 5,200 ballots had been cast there by the closing of the polls at 8 p.m., according to the Registrar of Voters.
