New Program Promotes Sustainability in Local Community
SDSU has joined the Sustainable Cities Network of institutions and will launch a Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities program this fall.
The green industry is booming, and San Diego State University's Center for Regional Sustainability is launching a program for students of all majors to get involved in the growing industry.
Beginning this fall, SDSU will debut the Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities program, helping National City reach its sustainability goals.
The yearlong partnership focuses existing SDSU courses on sustainability projects, giving students the opportunity to gain real-world experience while making a difference in the local community.
Students enrolled in the program will take eight to 10 courses ranging from audiology to business while working with National City representatives to achieve established goals such reducing noise and air pollution, designing and planning for more walkable and safe streets, and increasing access to healthier foods and green spaces.
Faculty from public affairs, art, geography, graphic design and communications will be involved in the initiative.
"It is the responsibility of higher education to prepare students for the future challenges that they will face in their community," said Jessica Barlow, professor and director of the school of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.
"The Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities incorporates these high-impact practices allowing students to address projects related to current, real-world challenges in their community and identify ways to positively effect change.”
About Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities
Each academic year, the Community Engagement for Sustainable Cities program will partner with a different city or government entity in the San Diego region.
Students who complete the program will be prepared for careers in areas such as green technology and environmental business.
The framework for the program is based on the University of Oregon's award winning Sustainable City Year program, which has directed more than 2,000 students to assist within five cities in Oregon in building an equitable and sustainable future.
