Men's Basketball Attendance Soars
SDSU was the only Division I institution from California ranked in the top 40.
For the third consecutive season, the San Diego State University men's basketball program produced the top average home attendance in the state of California, averaging 12,414 fans inside its on-campus home, Viejas Arena.
Nationally, the Aztecs ranked 27th, its highest rating in school history.
Representing California
SDSU was the only Division I institution hailing from the Golden State ranked in the top 40 and finished ahead of UCLA, which averaged the second-most fans among California schools at its home games. The Bruins played in front of an average of 9,549 fans to rank 45th overall.
San Diego State played 15 home games in 2012-13, all of which produced sell-out crowds. Among schools that played 15 or fewer home games, SDSU ranked first in average home attendance ahead of second-place Florida.
This is the fifth straight season in which the Aztecs have seen their national average attendance ranking move up. San Diego State was 76th in 2008-09, 72nd in 2009-10, 30th in 2010-11, 29th in 2011-12 and now 27th in 2012-13.
Aztec pride
Entering the 2013-14 campaign, the Aztecs have played in front of 22 consecutive sellouts, 26 of 34 over the last two seasons and 39 of 49 dating back to the start of the 2010-11 season.
Percentage-wise, San Diego State has played in front of 12,414 fans inside Viejas Arena 79.6 percent of the time the last three years. In those three years, an average of 12,062 made their way to Montezuma Mesa to watch the Aztecs.
SDSU is coming off a school-record fourth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament where it advanced past the second round for the second time in three seasons.
Last year, the Aztecs finished with a 23-11 record, which represented their eighth-consecutive campaign of 20 or more wins, and their postseason berth was their eighth in a row as well.
