Athletics receives $1 Million Challenge from Zable Foundation
A unique gift challenges the SDSU Community to match funds to support the Aztec Basketball Performance Center.
On the heels of the public announcement of the Aztec Basketball Performance Center plans and a $1 million lead gift from Jeff Jacobs, San Diego State announces a $1 million challenge gift from the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation.
“We are excited to announce a $1 million challenge gift from the Zable Foundation” said SDSU Director of Athletics, Jim Sterk. “Walter and Betty Zable had a long history of philanthropy in the San Diego community and we are thrilled their Foundation has pledged its support for the Aztec Basketball Performance Center. We are confident that the SDSU community will support this project and match the $1 million challenge.”
The Zable Foundation pledge comes in the form of a challenge: to realize the gift, SDSU must raise a corresponding $1 million through the Basketball Center’s public campaign.
“The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation is proud to support Aztec Basketball,” said President of the Zable Foundation, Warren Magill. “The Zable’s were not native San Diegans but strongly believed in giving back to the community. With Mr. Zable’s love for sports, the foundation believed this opportunity was a great way to keep the Zable name alive in the community. We hope this challenge gift will inspire San Diego State fans and alumni to support the Basketball Performance Center like the Zable Foundation.”
The Zable Foundation’s gift contributes to The Campaign for SDSU, which to date has raised more than $436 million of its $500 million goal.
The campaign launched in 2007 to create new opportunities for student success and to help SDSU continue to develop as a leading public research university. To date, the Campaign has received more than 44,500 gifts from alumni, friends, faculty, staff, parents and community partners, including 81 gifts of $1 million or more.
The $14.5 million Basketball Performance Center will be located just west of the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center. Two full-length courts, eight baskets, locker rooms, film rooms, team lounges, athletic training room and coaches locker rooms will enhance the Aztec Men’s and Women’s championship basketball programs.
