An SDSU senior's passion for sports and journalism is paving the way for a bright future.
David Frerker is a senior at San Diego State University majoring in journalism and media studies. He is currently a member of the Society of Professional Journalism Chapter at SDSU and is an alumnus of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
While at SDSU, Frerker began a sports blog, San Diego Sports Domination, and was nominated for eCollegeFinder's Top College Athletics Blog for 2013. The blog covers all sports in San Diego, but specializes on SDSU.
Why did you choose SDSU?
My love for San Diego State begun at a young age — back in the days when I was playing baseball at the La Jolla YMCA. The night before every game I would watch my favorite hitting video of Aztec for Life Tony Gwynn.
I stopped playing baseball after my freshman year of high school to focus on football. I listened to every Aztec sporting event on the radio while I did my homework or travelled around town. My best friend and I made a pact that we would both attend SDSU together once we graduated from high school.
What inspired you to declare your major?
I chose journalism because I love sports journalism and studying the way that journalists and the companies that employ them think.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
The best piece of advice that I have ever received comes from a quote that my parents told me when I was a young child: “Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.” - Swami Sivananda
What are your future goals?
In the future I would like to become a sports broadcaster on national television, reporting on college athletics and the Olympics. I would also like to open my own gourmet sports restaurant serving the highest quality food for sports fans. I could see myself owning my own sports public relations firm.
What is the first website you look at every day?
I am very biased on this question since I run a local San Diego Sports Blog named San Diego Sports Domination. The first thing I do in the morning after checking my emails look at how many hits the website has gotten so far that day. That helps me judge if I need to add content to the site. Then I open all of my social media websites (Facebook, Twitter and Google +) and see what is going on.
What experience at SDSU has changed your life the most?
The experience that changed my life the most was joining Phi Delta Fraternity. Being a founding father of a fraternity has allowed me to better myself academically and socially. Also, becoming a member of the Society of Professional Journalists at SDSU has allowed me to better myself professionally.
What is the most interesting or surprising thing about you?
I am a San Diego native and played ice hockey when I was a child. I am quite a good cook and have developed many new recipes over the years. My first live sports webcast was done in my bedroom using patio furniture for my “set.”
