Sporting events are made up of a series of moments. There are moments of joy and elation and moments of sadness and disbelief. San Diego State University fans will be able to capture themselves in those moments thanks to a new fan experience technology being launched at the January 18 men’s basketball game against UNLV at Viejas Arena.

SDSU has partnered with FanPics to be the pilot venue for its new proprietary technology that captures candid photos of every single fan in a venue during key moments in sports. Enabled by patent pending camera technology and software, fans simply enter their seat number into FanPics’s website or mobile app and all of the great images of them celebrating and commiserating from that game will be sent to their mobile devices to share with friends, family and colleagues.

Download the app on Apple or Android devices, or sign up at the FanPics website (www.fanpics.com).

“Every sporting event has amazing moments that make people jump up and down, hug and high five or even cry,” said Marco Correia, FanPics’s director of Product Development and Branding, and graduate of SDSU’s College of Business Administration. “Historically, the focus has been on capturing what happens on the field or on the court. What we’re doing is capturing that raw emotion that happens in the stands, and letting the fans share those emotions, those moments, with friends and family in a way that’s never been done before.”

FanPics was founded in August of 2012 with four co-founders from London, New York, Houston and San Diego. An initial prototype was built and tested in London and has been refined and improved and is now installed at Viejas Arena where it will capture moments from the remainder of the 2013-14 men’s basketball season.

“We are always trying to improve the fan experience at our events,” said Steve Schnall, SDSU associate athletic director. “Basketball games at Viejas Arena are already one of the best fan experiences in San Diego. FanPics will give our fans, no matter where they are in the arena, lasting memories and a way to share the experience with others.”

Using the app is completely free. Prints of the pictures can be purchased directly from the app.

The next several home games where fans can experience FanPics include Colorado State on Feb. 1 and Nevada on Feb. 8.
