Exploring a Future in STEM
Middle school students will visit SDSU to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The Pre-College Institute at San Diego State University is hosting 165 low-income middle school students for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)2 Exploration Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 21 at SDSU.
Through a panel of SDSU college students and stimulating workshops and labs, students from various urban San Diego middle schools will have the opportunity to explore career options in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The STEM2 Exploration Day aims to inform middle school students of low-income backgrounds about careers and educational paths in STEM and to motivate students to venture into these careers.
“The future of the country is based on new innovations in sciences, technology and engineering and the Pre-College Institute is dedicated to preparing and encouraging students to pursue higher education and careers in these fields by offering resources and programs such as STEM2 Exploration Day” said Cynthia Park, executive director of the Pre-College Institute and a professor of teacher education at SDSU.
A day at SDSU
The day's events include a campus tour, student panel and several STEM-themed workshops and labs. Presenters and workshops include:
- Eric Frost, keynote speaker and director of the SDSU Computer Visualization Lab, speaking on “STEMing the Tide of Disasters: Flood of Information Equals Insight and Better Decisions”
- Black Student Science Organization, "The Science Behind Silly Putty"
- Clive Dorman, Oceans Lab
- Douglas C. Leonard, Susan Kurth and Nicholas Earl, Planetarium Show
- PSI Beta Club, “No Brain, No Gain”
“We want to encourage middle school students to explore academic and career pathways in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by working with our partners to provide hands-on activities to spark an interest in STEM fields that will hopefully lead the students to pursue higher education opportunities,” said Nadia Rohlinger, coordinator of service-learning for the Pre-College Institute at SDSU.
