The Vagina Monologues at SDSU
SDSU's production of The Vagina Monologues will run from March 14 to 16 at the Don Powell Theatre.
This semester, SDSU NewsCenter will focus on the arts with stories of the creative endeavors of our students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Every nine seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten.
One in three women will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.
Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women — more than car accidents and muggings combined.
To combat these chilling statistics, the women of V-Day SDSU will host this year's production of "The Vagina Monologues." The event — which has taken place at San Diego State University for more than a decade — features 13 individual monologues from women, ranging from humorous anecdotes to heart-wrenching personal experiences.
"Everyone can get something out of this," said Sharlene Castle, president of V-Day SDSU. "Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or experience, there's something for everyone."
Last year, V-Day SDSU raised $16,500 — 90 percent of which was donated to the Center for Community Solutions, which provides services to women who have experienced domestic and sexual violence. The remaining 10 percent was donated to the One Billion Rising, a global campaign to end violence against women, rise for justice and promote gender equality.

V-Day SDSU is the San Diego State University chapter of V-Day, a non-profit committed to ending violence against women.
Each year, V-Day SDSU produces a benefit performance of Eve Ensler's award-winning play, "The Vagina Monologues" and donates 100 percent of the proceeds — 90 percent to a local beneficiary and 10 percent to the national V-Day organization.
The beneficiary for 2014 is the San Diego Youth Services Surviving Together, Achieving and Reaching for Success (STARS) program, which provides services to teen girls in San Diego who have been involved in commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.
The organization provides support to empower youth to escape sexual exploitation by developing their inner strengths, building a sense of community and supporting their reintegration into mainstream society.
