Exploring Contemporary Indonesian Dance
SDSU film professor Mark Freeman will screen his recent film on Saturday, May 3.
This semester, SDSU NewsCenter will focus on the arts with stories of the creative endeavors of our students, faculty, staff and alumni.
San Diego State University film professor Mark Freeman received a Fulbright award to teach documentary filmmaking in Jakarta, Indonesia during the spring 2013 semester.
Upon returning from abroad, Freeman completed the film Rasa Dari Tari/The Soul of Dance, which is an introduction to the vibrant diversity of contemporary dance in Indonesia. He will screen the film at the San Diego Central Library Auditorium on Saturday, May 3.
The 26-minute film is rooted both in tradition and the idioms of modern movement. Audiences will be introduced to work ranging from site-specific solos to multimedia musical theater.
It includes excerpts from six dance works: Padusi, Bodies of Malay, The Red Shawl (Selendang Merah), In Front of Papua, Update Status and Body Without a Brain.
"The film is an exploration between continuity and change," Freeman said. "Most are more aware of traditional Indonesian dance, but contemporary dance is modern, yet encompasses traditional methods."
