Fulbright Program Awards Six SDSU Students
The students will teach and conduct research abroad during the 2014-2015 academic year.
Six San Diego State University students will teach and conduct research abroad next year as recipients of the prestigious Fulbright award.
Five of the students will serve as English teaching assistants and the sixth will investigate the relationship between air pollution and birth outcomes in Mexico City.
SDSU is a top producer of Fulbright award-winners. Since 2005, more than 65 SDSU students have received Fulbright grants. From India to Brazil Aztec Fulbright recipients for the 2014-2015 academic year are:
Estefania Castañeda Pérez As an English teaching assistant in Spain, she will use her experience from the Model United Nations to assist students in public speaking and start an after-school program to connect Spanish and American students.
Jesse Elias As an English teaching assistant in Turkey, he will organize weekly language exchanges and a poetry club for students to share and discuss contemporary Turkish and American poems. He hopes to compile an anthology of his students’ favorite works as a resource for future Fulbright grantees.
La'Shanae Johnson As an English teaching assistant in India, she will facilitate discussions led by students at an adolescent book club, create a community lending library focusing on early literary development and teach martial arts to showcase self-worth and inner strength.
Heriberto Vasquez As an English teaching assistant in Colombia, he will creatively engage students in language retention using his knowledge of the arts, his work with the LGBT community and his experiences in community-based learning.
Idmantzi Torres As an English teaching assistant in Brazil, she will establish an extracurricular stress reduction group for university students featuring a variety of activities including yoga, breathing exercises, music listening and discussion.
Veronica Arteaga Working with researchers at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), she will investigate the relationship between air pollution and birth outcomes in Mexico City. Arteaga, a student in the SDSU master’s of public health program, will also present at hospital-based prenatal care classes and provide educational pamphlets to expectant mothers. 2015-2016 applicants Informational workshops for students interested in applying for 2015-2016 Fulbright awards will be held on campus throughout the spring and summer.
