7 Things About Blaire Ward

Blaire Ward is a junior majoring in communication and minoring in management.

She has been involved with Associated Students for three years and currently serves as a Student Diversity Commission Representative for the organization. She is also a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, SDSU Rotaract, Sigma Alpha Lambda Honors Society and the SDSU Cast.

1. Why did you choose SDSU?

Blaire Ward I toured college campuses around the country my junior year of high school and attended a few open houses. San Diego State University was the only college where everyone I met was friendly and welcoming. I knew there was a strong sense of pride on the campus when I saw everyone wearing red and black. Students looked active, happy, awake and alive.

Administrators and staff were very helpful and open to answering all of my questions as well. I am sure that the traditional architecture, constant sunshine and wonderful location may have added to the welcoming feel of the school, but with all that aside, I just had the gut feeling like many other students do! I knew that SDSU would be my home. Now I love it more than I can put into words and am so grateful every day that I go here.
 
2. What inspired you to declare your major?

I believe in recognizing your weaknesses and building on your strengths. That’s why I am a communication major and a management minor. I was excited to go to college because I finally got to study something I already had become pretty good at — working with people. I wanted to be able to communicate efficiently and effectively. This is so important in any career field and I wanted to become an expert at it. I chose the management minor to brush up on some skills I’m not as good at. I think my choice has allowed me to become a very well rounded scholar and continues to prepare me for the career I want to pursue in the entertainment industry.

3. What is the best piece of advice you ever received? 

A good friend once told me, “You can only do the best you can do and be the best you can be.” In other words, never focus on what other people are doing and how you can be better than them. Be aware of what they’re doing — maybe even use it to motivate you, but only so you can become the best version of yourself and get better and better every day.

4. What are your future goals?

I think it’s important that everyone finds a purpose in college. To do this, I want to increase student involvement on campus to 50 percent by 2020. I am going to start working with students, staff and administration to accomplish this.

5. What is the first website you look at every day?

I make sure to check my e-mail first thing in the morning.

6. What experience at SDSU has changed your life the most?

Being a part of Associated Students. It's an organization that anyone can join and it brings people together and works to maintain and strengthen a relationship with the university as a whole. The people I’ve met have taught me and continue to teach me so much every day.

7. What is the most interesting or surprising thing about you?

Everyone who meets me thinks I am an outgoing person. I do thrive on other people’s energy and I would call myself a “people person,” but I really am an introvert. In fact, I’ve taken many versions of the Meyers Briggs Personality Test to prove it! I recharge by myself and I love to be alone. I would rather stay home or do something low key then go out any night! But don’t get me wrong — I still know how to have fun!

1. What was the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or down?

I saw "Fury," and I give it a thumbs up. I cried a lot. I get attached to characters in movies. It was a very vivid portrayal of what happened in World War II. It illustrated how close the war actually was and how brave our heroes were. I am very patriotic and it definitely pulled at my heart strings.

2. What city would you like to visit or visit again?

London. I always used to dream about it and I love British humor. I almost went to college there as well! I finally traveled to London last summer with my family and cried tears of joy the second I walked out of the airport. Everything about it fits my personality. I want to live there some day, it stole my heart.

3. What kind of music do you listen to/what are your favorite bands?

I love reggae, country, acoustic and just about everything. The only music I’m not a huge fan of is era stuff from the 90’s or hard core rock … that yelling stuff just sounds angry to me. However, I’d have to say that my favorite musician is John Mayer by far.
