Disciplinary Action Against Delta Sigma Phi
The Delta Sigma Phi chapter at SDSU closed.
San Diego State University’s Division of Student Affairs has announced the disciplinary action that will be taken against the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity as a result of a consistent pattern of policy violations that includes the harassment of a Take Back the Night March on Friday, November 21, 2014, as well as other significant hazing and alcohol misconduct issues.
As a result of this consistent violation of university policies, the Delta Sigma Phi national office, in consultation with SDSU, has closed its Gamma Alpha chapter. Delta Sigma Phi and SDSU have agreed that the earliest date for recolonization would be fall 2016. The return date is subject to a review of demonstrated adherence to university policies.
“It recently became clear that certain members of Gamma Alpha Chapter have not maintained the integrity that our members deserve and that our history demands,” read a statement from the Delta Sigma Phi national office. “A series of incidents highlighted behavior inconsistent with the high standards that have been synonymous with the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity at San Diego State University. After learning of widespread member misconduct issues, the National Fraternity determined it was not in the best interest of Delta Sigma Phi to continue operating Gamma Alpha Chapter. The Fraternity cannot, and will not, tolerate blatant disregard toward our policies and standards for members and chapters.”
Additionally, individuals involved in the harassment policy violation will be subject to a Title IX policy investigation and a student code of conduct policy violation investigation.
“There is no place in our campus community for the type of ongoing behaviors displayed by those involved with this fraternity chapter,” said Eric Rivera, SDSU’s Vice President for Student Affairs. “We appreciate the willingness of the national office of Delta Sigma Phi to step in and address these issues and take action with us. We hope that through these actions, when the time is right, they will bring a chapter back to SDSU and be productive members of our community.”
The process of returning to campus involves meeting a series of significant milestones. The fraternity's house can not be utilized until the colony reaches approved charter status and they must maintain an alcohol and drug free environment, both in the chapter house and individually-leased spaces. In addition, the chapter must employ a full-time house manager to address behavioral issues and advise the chapter. The organization will also create an advising panel that will provide individual advising for each chapter officer.
