San Diego State University’s Division of Student Affairs has announced disciplinary actions against the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity as a result of a consistent pattern of violations related to health and safety and alcohol policies.

As a result of these violations, the SDSU chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is sanctioned to probation effective immediately.  The probation will include the following stipulations self-imposed by the chapter: educational programming; a moratorium of social events; a dry chapter facility; and no recruitment for spring 2015. These provisions will remain in effect until Aug. 15, 2015.

The university has been working in partnership with the SAE student leaders, local alumni and national Sigma Alpha Epsilon office in an effort to change the culture of the Greek Community on campus.

“We appreciate the willingness of not just the national office of SAE, but the members of the local chapter as well, to understand the seriousness of these issues and work with us to address them in a positive way,” said Eric Rivera, SDSU’s Vice President for Student Affairs.

Members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, along with the entire SDSU Greek community, will participate in mandatory training outlined recently by SDSU’s InterFraternity Council, including taking the Agent of Change online educational training program. Sigma Alpha Epsilon will also enroll a minimum of four members in FratMANers, a peer health education program specifically for SDSU fraternity men; and will participate in a number of other trainings throughout the year.

These sanctions are unrelated to disciplinary action taken last week against Delta Sigma Phi. Each organization is afforded the opportunity to address alleged violations on their own.
