A gift from the family of an emeritus professor will establish a new scholarship endowment.
The Campaign For ... series highlights recent contributions to The Campaign for SDSU.
Karen Kluchonic, ’14, received scholarship support from SDSU through the endowed Honorable Scholar Award established by Professor Emerita Carey Wall. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to one or more undergraduate students majoring in English or comparative literature and earning a minimum GPA of 3.50.
Kluchonic currently teaches 7th and 8th grade language arts at La Paloma Academy in Tucson, Arizona.
The power of support
Endowed scholarships are powerful tools to support students at SDSU.
A recent $50,000 gift from the family of Professor Emeritus Kurt Bohnsack and his wife, Julie, will create a new scholarship endowment for students at San Diego State University.
Bohnsack taught zoology in the biology department for 34 years and was president of the SDSU Retirement Association from 1994-1996.
The current and past presidents of the Retirement Association — Dean Popp, Ph.D., and Patricia Koppman respectively — worked with the Bohnsack family to realize this new gift. It will support students whose close family members are current or former SDSU employees.
SDSU has raised $530 million toward a goal of $750 million in private funding to support the university’s people and programs. Creating additional scholarship endowments is a primary goal of The Campaign for SDSU. Scholarship endowments allow SDSU to invest the gift and use the earnings to support students with financial challenges.
Campaign highlightsOther gifts to The Campaign for SDSU last month include:
- $250,000 from Derek Aberle to support athletic scholarships and the Basketball Performance Center
- Northrup Grumman's gift of $65,000 to support the College of Engineering, Associated Students, MESA, and the Society of American Military Engineers
- Alumnus Robert Gordon's scholarship endowment in the form of a planned gift for $518,409
- $10,000 from AT&T to support the Visualization Lab in the College of Sciences
- A gift of $44,944 from the Windgate Charitable Foundation to support the Furniture Studio and the Visiting Artist Program in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts
