ROTC Commissioning Ceremonies
Cadets from the Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC programs will be commissioned.
Army Reserve Officers Training Corps Commissioning Ceremony
10 a.m., Friday, May 15, U.S.S. Midway
A crowd of more than 250 friends and family members will gather aboard the U.S.S. Midway where 32 Army ROTC cadets, 14 of whom are San Diego State University students, will be commissioned into active duty, reserve and National Guard service.
The commissioning guest speaker is Major General Ted Martin, commanding general, 2nd Infantry Division, South Korea.
Air Force ROTC Commissioning Ceremony
3 p.m., Sunday, May 17, U.S.S. Midway
The Air Force ROTC program will commission 20 cadets with the rank of second lieutenant — 12 of whom are SDSU students.
Of the 20 new lieutenants, nine will be heading to pilot training and four were selected by specialty boards to serve as a special agent in the Office of Special Investigations, a combat rescue officer and two as air support liaison officers attached to the U.S. Army. The remainder will be assigned duties in intelligence, logistics, nuclear missile operations, cyber operations and developmental engineering.
Major General John C. Flournoy, Jr. will be the commissioning guest speaker. Flournoy entered the Air Force in 1986 as a graduate of the Air Force ROTC program at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He has served as a B-52 pilot, a T-37 instructor pilot, and an HH-60G combat rescue helicopter pilot. Flournoy has had multiple command assignments within the Air Force Reserve Command, during which time he has also flown the C-130 and KC-10 aircraft. He is currently the commander of Fourth Air Force at March Air Reserve Base, where he leads more than 30,000 personnel in 300 different units throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii and Guam.
Navy ROTC Commissioning Ceremony
10 a.m., Friday May 22, Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego
After completion of academic requirements and the Navy ROTC program, 38 Navy ROTC students, 13 of whom are SDSU students, will be administered the oath for commissioned officers and pin on the rank of ensign for the Navy or second lieutenant for the Marines.
During the ceremony, Vice Admiral Thomas Rowden will speak. Rowden has served in many sea duty assignments in the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. His first flag assignment was as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea. His most recent assignment was on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff as director, Surface Warfare Division. Rowden earned his master of arts in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. His current assignment is commander Naval Surface Forces/Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
