Five Aztecs Taken in Major League Baseball Draft

After San Diego State Aztec pitcher Bubba Derby and outfielder Steven Pallares were taken on Tuesday during day two of the annual Major League Draft, three fellow Aztecs heard their names called on Wednesday during final day the pro selection process.

The trio of juniors included catcher Seby Zavala, pitcher Mark Seyler and third baseman Ty France.

Zavala was the first SDSU player taken on Wednesday, going to the Chicago White Sox in the 12th round. The junior catcher hit .290 this past season while leading the team in home runs (14) and RBI (67). Zavala was named the MVP of the 2015 Mountain West Tournament and was also a second-team all-West Region and all-conference selection.

Seyler was a first-team all-Mountain West selection after compiling a record of 9-3 with a 2.77 earned run average. The right-hander was a first-team all-conference honoree and also earned all-tourney honors at the 2015 Mountain West Tournament. He led the conference in victories and finished third in earned run average, strikeouts (79) and opponent batting average (.221).

France is a three-year starter at third base for the Aztecs who hit .336 this past season with 15 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 49 runs batted in. A first-team all-Mountain West selection, he batted .381 with 24 RBI in conference play.

SDSU tied Nevada for the most Mountain West players taken followed by UNLV and Fresno State with three each, New Mexico with two and Air Force with one.
