Cultural Diversity in Art
The SDSU Downtown Gallery has teamed up with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art for a unique exhibit.
The San Diego State University Downtown Gallery is hosting an exhibit presented by the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art featuring art from the collection of Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman. The exhibition features selected pieces of the art of Jonathan Green along with art from the private collection of Green and his life partner Richard Weedman.
The collection includes paintings, sculptures and works on paper by African American, Caribbean, Latin American and American artists that reflect the breadth of their interests, and the cultural diversity that has contributed to the development of American art. Other noted artists in the exhibit include Romare Bearden, William Carter, Elizabeth Catlett, Jose V. Jaurequi, Reynier Lianes and Hale Woodruff.
Multicultural art
Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina. Raised in the black "Gullah" culture of the coastal Southeast, he grew up speaking the region's dialect— English mixed with grammar elements from several African languages. Green is a graduate of the prestigious School of Art Institute of Chicago. His works, noted for the masterful use of color and exquisite portrayal of the human figure, evoke the semitropical atmosphere and gentle daily rhythms of his agrarian home.
It has been over two decades since Green has been on the West Coast. Upon his arrival, he will lecture on the campus of SDSU, meet with local artists and conduct a multicultural artist round table in collaboration with Casa Familiar and the Front Gallery in San Ysidro.
The exhibition will run between August 13 and October 18, 2015 with an opening reception Saturday, August 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. in SDSU’s Downtown Gallery, which is located at 725 West Broadway. This exhibition is free to the public.
