World-Renowned Mariachi Vargas Concert Benefits SDSU
El Gran Concierto de Gala de Mariachi will raise funds for Love Library.
In a unique show of international support for San Diego State University, the world-renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan will perform a spectacular gala concert at the new Baja California Center in Rosarito on Saturday, December 12 with a portion of the proceeds going to support SDSU’s Love Library.
Concert producer Edward Marsh, an SDSU alumnus, is delighted by Mariachi Vargas’ wish to share their success and ‘pay it forward’ to future generations.
“I’m excited that the profits from this concert will be shared to benefit students at my alma mater, San Diego State University, as well as Rosarito’s new Boys and Girls Club and the Youth Orchestra programs of both the Mexican states of Baja and Queretaro” Marsh said. “And this is just the beginning. This is the first concert of a projected international tour that will share this wonderful musical genre with the world.”
Recognized as the world’s finest mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan has elevated traditional Mexican music to international heights and acclaim during their 118-year history. Under the direction of the famed Ruben Fuentes since the 1950’s, they have composed and performed dozens of Mexican standards. The audience at this gala performance will be the first to hear five new arrangements.
The sound of Mariachi
Unique to this performance, Mariachi Vargas will be accompanied by a full symphonic orchestra, made up of 64 musicians from both sides of the border, led by maestro Jose Guadalupe Flores, the director of the world-renowned Queretaro Symphony.
Ballet Folklorico, Compania Danza de Ticuan will bring their vibrant dancing to further enhance this spectacular performance.
“Mariachi is Mexico’s premier cultural contribution to the world, as demonstrated by UNESCO awarding its Patrimony to the art form in 2011,” Marsh said. “The audience at this gala will be the very first to hear five brand new arrangements of Vargas classics that are being especially created by Salon de Fama inductee Ruben Fuentes and Vargas’ new musical director Carlos Martinez.”
The event is the only concert to be presented in 2015 at Baja’s largest and most modern indoor conference and convention venue, the new Baja California Center, located just 35 minutes south of downtown San Diego.
