Student Organization Spotlight: Aztec Racing
Aztec Racing designs, builds, and competes with a formula open-wheel race car.
Each year, the group travels to Lincoln, Neb. to compete against 80 other university teams in a collegiate design series event hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
The organization's president, Adam Kuebler, says the team has become a family of great people on campus with the same goal: building the best car possible.
Why did you join Aztec Racing?
I want to pursue a career in the automotive industry, preferably in the racing field. I personally have been working on cars since the age of five, so this allows me take my knowledge of cars and apply it in a different aspect.
When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?
We invite anyone to join our club. Most people interested in Aztec Racing enjoy cars or want to learn more about cars. No prior knowledge of cars is necessary as you will learn everything you need to know by being involved in the club.
When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?
Our meetings take place every other Friday at 6 p.m. in the Computer Aided Mechanics Center behind the engineering building. The club fee is $50, which will get you either a team T-shirt or hat and also pays for various activities such as company tours as well as refreshments at meetings.
Does your organization have any upcoming events?
Our primary event each year is our competition in Nebraska, but we also have plenty of other events coming up. We have a company tour with Transpower planned for the end of September and we will be attending the Los Angeles Auto Show to display our car along with several other Southern California Formula SAE teams. We also plan to showcase our car at the Long Beach Grand Prix later this semester. We will have other company tours with local engineering companies to show our members what they can do with their degrees.

What SDSU faculty have had an impact on your organization?
We would like to thank Mike Lester, our faculty advisor and the machine shop faculty member for the College of Engineering; Theresa Garcia, assistant dean of Student Affairs for the College of Engineering; and Donovan Geiger, student affairs counselor for the College of Engineering. They have been the biggest help and we appreciate everything they do for us and the College of Engineering.
