Student Organization Spotlight: American Medical Student Association
AMSA strives to help pre-medical students become well-rounded candidates for applying to medical school.
Through AMSA, members are able to volunteer with the local health organizations, shadow physicians, and attend guest speaker panels, professional development workshops, and medical school tours.
The organization’s co-president, Marco Rovira, says being part of AMSA allowed him to be more involved on campus, especially with various health organizations. Through the organization, Rovira said he created lasting relationships with fellow peers and faculty, which allowed him to grow as a person.
What has been the highlight of your time with the American Medical Student Association?
As an upperclassman and officer in AMSA, it is my privilege to lead this organization to the next level with the support from the officers in the executive board. We are looking forward to an exciting year full of activities!
Is your organization open to all majors?
AMSA is open to all majors interested in pursuing medicine in the future. We are here to help pre-med students become well-rounded candidates for applying to medical school. We have many students from a variety of majors: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, kinesiology, psychology, music, statistics, and public health.
When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?
We are looking for students who have the motivation and passion toward healthcare and making a difference in people’s lives.
When are your meetings and is there a membership fee?
We meet every Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. in the Geology, Mathematics, and Computer Science building, room 310. The local chapter dues are $25 for joining in the fall or $20 when joining in the spring. We encourage students to also register with the National AMSA, which costs $75. The membership is valid for five years, exempts the member from one semester of local dues, and comes with many benefits.
Does your organization have any upcoming events?
We have many activities planned for the semester such as physician guest speakers, internship opportunities, workshops, community service activities, and weekend socials.

What impact have SDSU faculty made on your organization?
Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO) Director Gwendolyn Hill has made a significant impact not only in AMSA but to all of the health organizations on campus. She advises more than 700 students every semester and certainly cares a lot about her students. I would like to put a spotlight on Gwen for how much work she has done to improve the pre-health department here at SDSU and her expertise in guiding each student in reaching his/her goals.
